About
Janet Key, MS, is assistant professor of journalism in residence at Northwestern University in Qatar. She has worked for more than 25 years as a journalist for some of the world’s most respected news outlets, including United Press International, Newsweek, The New York Times, Business Week and the Chicago Tribune before turning to academia.

She has extensive experience in national, international (including in Northern Ireland and the Middle East) and financial reporting. A reporting assignment in the Middle East, which began in Beirut and took her to the Arabian Gulf, sparked a lifelong passion for the region. A stint as an adjunct professor at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism in the United States started her career in academia. Before joining NU-Q, Key combined her interests in teaching and journalism in a seven-year stretch at the American University in Cairo. She pioneered its multi-media journalism labs, headed its teaching newspaper and co-authored its new convergent journalism curriculum.
