Qatar

Located on the coast of the Arabian Gulf, Qatar is a small, safe nation of prosperity and vision. With a vigorous economy based on oil and gas reserves, its capital city, Doha, has emerged as a center for media, business, culture and education.

Qatar’s investment in education

Education plays a crucial role in Qatar's National Vision 2030 and the country has invested significant resources to see this plan to fruition.

Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, chairperson of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, is the visionary behind Education City. This 2,500-acre campus is an impressive academic hub, home to universities from around the world. Each school in Education City was hand-picked by the Qatar Foundation for its ability to educate and train students in fields that will help Qatar grow and diversify.

In the case of Northwestern University, Her Highness Sheikha Moza recognized that the Middle East is undergoing a renaissance in the areas of media and communication. She believed that providing a Northwestern education in Qatar would feed these burgeoning industries with much-needed talent, giving Qatar media a global voice.

In 2008, Northwestern University in Qatar opened the doors to its first class of students; today, NU-Q students and alumni are shaping media and communication in the Middle East and around the globe.

Why study in Qatar?

NU-Q students benefit from the established curricula of the home campus, programs that provide a strong liberal arts foundation with theoretical and practical coursework in the specific areas of journalism or communication. Given its location in the Middle East, NU-Q students can also choose coursework, internship and research opportunities that are specific to regional issues and the emerging Middle Eastern media industry. This fusion of the traditional and the progressive provides excellent preparation for a career anywhere in the world.

Education City is an engaging, exciting place to get a post-secondary education. Students come from all over the world—at NU-Q alone, students represent 29 countries—which creates a culture of diversity and respect.

NU-Q works in collaboration with the other institutions of Education City. In a cross-registration agreement, students can choose electives from other universities, tailoring their coursework to create a customized learning experience.

For all universities in Qatar, class sizes are small, giving professors the chance to engage with their students on a more individual basis. Students from around the world come here to learn and begin their careers, and the opportunities continue to build, year after year.

Why build a career in Qatar?

Doha has become a hub for major news and media operations in the Middle East, including Al Jazeera and the Doha Film Institute. It is home to newspapers, magazines, Internet start-ups and a flourishing film industry, all seeking the type of bright, talented professionals that NU-Q produces.

Because the media and communication industry is new to Qatar and the region, it is still growing and taking shape, presenting unique opportunities for young, visionary media professionals.
