Education plays a crucial role in Qatar's National Vision 2030 and the country has invested significant resources to see this plan to fruition.
Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, chairperson of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, is the visionary behind Education City. This 2,500-acre campus is an impressive academic hub, home to universities from around the world. Each school in Education City was hand-picked by the Qatar Foundation for its ability to educate and train students in fields that will help Qatar grow and diversify.
In the case of Northwestern University, Her Highness Sheikha Moza recognized that the Middle East is undergoing a renaissance in the areas of media and communication. She believed that providing a Northwestern education in Qatar would feed these burgeoning industries with much-needed talent, giving Qatar media a global voice.
In 2008, Northwestern University in Qatar opened the doors to its first class of students; today, NU-Q students and alumni are shaping media and communication in the Middle East and around the globe.

NU-Q works in collaboration with the other institutions of Education City. In a cross-registration agreement, students can choose electives from other universities, tailoring their coursework to create a customized learning experience.
