Justin Martin

Justin D. Martin is assistant professor in residence at Northwestern University in Qatar. His PhD is from the journalism school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2009). 

His research and writing focus on free speech in developing countries and emerging democracies, and media and politics in the Arab world. His work has been published in the Journal of Communication, Journalism Studies, International Communication Gazette, Journal of Media & Religion, Journal of Global Mass Communication, and elsewhere. A former Fulbright scholar in Jordan and professor at the American University in Cairo, Martin speaks several dialects of Arabic. 

As a journalist and essayist, he has reported on five continents for roughly 50 publications, including Columbia Journalism Review, The Chronicle of Higher Education, The San Francisco Chronicle, and The St. Petersburg Times. He teaches courses in media literacy, media ethics, and data-driven reporting. 

Martin also holds degrees from the University of Florida and High Point University.
