New York Times

The Evanston campus has both print and online versions of this newspaper. At NU-Q, faculty and some staff have personal subscriptions to this product.

NU-Q has 50 student passes (users) per day for 24 hour access for each.

Directions for setting up a student account and getting a group pass:

  1. Go to www.nytimes.com/GroupPass. Bookmarking the URL makes access even easier.
  2. The student will then be directed to either create an account or login.
  3. From there they will be given their pass and directions on how to connect.

Please note:

  • This account is accessible via Northwestern's IP range. This means students can use it in the building. They must use VPN to access the service from home.
  • Anyone who already has an account with the NY Times i.e faculty can't use the group passes.
  • At least 24 hours must have elapsed from the time you activated a previous group pass.
  • The network must have passes available.

Lynda is a software training & tutorial video library. Online tutorials help you learn about broad variety of software programs at your own pace. Northwestern University and lynda.com have partnered to offer University students, faculty and staff unlimited, on-demand access to a full library of online courses at no additional cost for a pilot period of one year. Log in with your NetID and password.

Rosetta Stone is a language learning program which enables you to develop beginning reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills in thirty different languages. Rosetta Stone utilizes language immersion, which means that all verbal and written information is provided in the target language. See staff at the information desk to create a user account. Improve your reading, writing, business or math skills with Learning Express. The database contains practice test tutorials, basic skills courses, and computer software tutorials. It allows you to answer, save, return to and score questions on practice versions of such standard tests as FCAT, SAT, ACT, GED, ASVAB, U.S. Citizenship and a range of academic and career tests.

Films for the Humanities and Sciences: Films on Demand (FFH)

Films On Demand is a Web-based digital video delivery service that allows you to view award winning videos in the humanities and sciences from the BBC, National Geographic, Bill Moyers Collection, TED; PBS and NOVA etc. Special features allow you to create your own accounts where you are able to create and share customized playlists, save your favorite videos for quick access, and set default preferences.

March of Time

With its first appearance on American motion picture screens in February 1935, The March of Time® startled journalists, filmmakers, and audiences alike with its controversial topics and unique approach to newsreels. The “issues,” as the newsreels were called, were a blend of confrontational journalism and docudrama, often using actors to stage events that had not been photographed on newsreel cameras. The series began with brief segments in the 1930s and eventually grew in length and scope to television programs of in-depth coverage of a single topic. It aired its last television segment in 1967.

The Stanley Milgram Films on Social Psychology

Stanley Milgram became a controversial and compelling public figure as a result of his shocking 1961 experiment, Obedience to Authority, which revealed the extraordinary actions average people will take to follow orders. Arab Advisors Group is a specialized research, analysis and consulting company focused on the Arab communications, media, technology and financial markets. The database provides access to the company’s reports and surveys. Results are available in pdf format. See staff at the information desk for login information. Google Scholar is an academic version of Google that indexes scholarly publications. It links directly to our library holdings and is a great place to start your research. Note that it does not search the subject-specialist electronic resources subscribed to by Northwestern University Libraries. The Library Databases provide a broader range of key resources in your research area.

First-time Google Scholar users:

Add Northwestern University to your Google Scholar Preferences for easy access to journal articles we own (type in the word "northwestern" under Library Links in Preferences). Note that if you are off campus, you must be using your NU-VPN client.

Sloan Consortium

The library has a faculty subscription with discounted pricing on Sloan-C conferences and workshops, free webinars, and discussion groups. Faculty must contact the library to a user name and password.

Off-campus access

Most digital resources are available for use off-campus to NU-Q students, faculty and staff with NetIDs. You will be automatically directed to the NU Online Passport login page when you select a digital resource. Once you log in with your NetID and password you will be redirected to the digital resource site that you originally selected. You may need to connect to the NU-Q VPN first.

Walk-in guests may request library staff to create a 24 hour guest NetID.
