Learn by doing
A hallmark of an NU-Q education is that students learn by doing the same work as professionals in the field. As a journalism student, this means that on a given day you could be interviewing sources, taking photos, recording audio and video, and compiling what you’ve collected into a story that teaches your audience something new about their world. As a communication student, you might write a script, direct classmates in a film shoot, or act in and edit a film.
Theory
Learning the theory and history of journalism and communication is essential to taking on a leadership role in one of these industries. Technical expertise can help you get a foot in the door with your eventual employer, but an ability to think critically and creatively can make you a leader in your field.
Foundation in the liberal arts
The success of Northwestern’s alumni lies not only in their abilities to do the day-to-day work of their chosen field, but also in their abilities to combine thinking and theory from a broad swath of knowledge. The filmmaker, for example, will make a better a film on modern-day Oman with knowledge of the history of the Middle East. The journalist will craft a better story on a new music venue with knowledge of business, finance, and mathematics.
